Short Bio

I have been a permanent researcher at ITC-irst, now FBK, since 1991.
During 1998-2003, I led the Multilingual natural speech technologies
(MUNST) research line at ITC-irst. During 2004-2007, I lead the
Cross-language information processing (Hermes) research line. From
2008, I will be co-leader of the Human Language Technology research
unit. My interests include statistical machine translation, spoken
language translation, statistical language modelling, information
retrieval, and speech recognition.

Current and Recent Activities

During 2007, I was mainly involved in the TC-STAR Integrated
Project and in the C-STAR Consortium. I'm also supporting the
development of Moses, an open source toolkit for statistical
machine translation, and of IRSTLM, an open source toolkit for
statistical language modeling.


I chaired the Int'l Workshop on Spoken Language Translation (IWSLT),
Trento, Italy, 15-16 October 2007.

In 2007 , I served in the Program Committees of:

I Summer 2006, I attended a six-week Summer Workshop at Johns Hopkins
University with the goal of developing an
Open Source Toolkit for SMT.

In Spring 2006 I co-organized OpenLab 2006, a workshop on speech translation devoted to young researchers. The workshop took place in Trento from March 29 to April 1.

In 2005, we did pretty at the IWSLt evaluation campaign (see viewgraphs
with results and press article in Italian).
 

Since 2002 I'm member of the Steering Committee of the Cross-Language Evaluation Forum (CLEF). 

I'm Editor in Chief of the ACM Trans. on Speech and Language Processing
and member of the editorial board of the journal Foundations and Trends in Information Retrieval.
